Corsicana, TX 75110
Overview
In Fall 1999 semester, Texas A&M University-Commerce and Navarro
College began a partnership to offer graduate and undergraduate
courses and degrees on the Navarro College campus located in Corsicana,
Texas. A majority of the courses are offered during the evening
hours to accommodate work schedules. This program increases the
availability and economy of educational opportunities throughout
the central Texas region.
Programs
Currently students may earn a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary
Studies (B.S.I.S) degree in elementary education without leaving
the Navarro campus in Corsicana. This program, in collaboration
with the area's public school districts, offers students an opportunity
to learn the art and science of teaching through field-based experiences.
After students complete their junior year of courses, they spend
two semesters in concentrated public school interactions. The first
semester, the intern semester, places students in public schools
two days per week; a third day is spent in seminars that deal with
academic content in teaching. The second semester, the resident
semester, places students in public schools daily with seminars
approximately every other week. During both semesters, students
work with a team of public school teachers and with university faculty.
Also available in Texas A&M University's Post Baccalaureate
Certification Program (TCP) for elementary education. This is designed
for individuals who are currently teaching, or considering a position,
and would like to pursue teacher certification on emergency permit.
It is available for highly motivated individuals who desire to begin
a new career in a profession where they are needed, valued, and
able to have a positive impact on lives of many. The Post Bac TCP
is uniquely designed to prepare students with an undergraduate degree
to become certified a s a teacher. Aspiring teachers will engage
in focused, practical training through graduate-level course work
leading to certification and, if desired, a graduate degree.
Students can also take undergraduate courses leading to a Bachelor
of Science in Criminal justice. Efforts are currently underway to
bring the entire degree program to the Partnership.
Also available are graduate level courses leading towards Master
and Doctoral Level degrees in special education and secondary/higher
education. At the graduate level, it is advisable to obtain a degree
plan from the desired department in Commerce.
Future plans include additional bachelor degrees and master degrees
offered in Corsicana.
