That is what state lawmakers and representatives from The Texas A&M University System said of the groundbreaking for the new Science & Technology Center.

At the ceremony in April, speakers termed the event a milestone for the institution and the beginning of a new era when the sciences will expand and play a prominent role on campus.

State Senator Bob Deuell, State Representative Dan Flynn, and Dr. Benton Cocanougher, Interim Chancellor for The Texas A&M University System, traveled to Commerce for the event.

Construction is currently under way for the $28 million state-of-the-art facility, which is the largest and most expensive construction project in the history of A&M-Commerce, according to President Keith McFarland.

It will also be the first new solely academic building on campus in close to 30 years.

Target date for completion of the building is the fall of 2005 with students and faculty using the facility in the spring of 2006.

Photos of the Science & Technology Center construction are posted on the A&M-Commerce Web site as the work progresses.
