Alumni display work at A&M-C

Some of the nation’s most well known photographers recently displayed work at their alma mater.

Approximately 50 prints from 14 alumni professional photographers were displayed in “The Third Floor Photography Invitational” at the University Gallery. The exhibit included published pieces seen in Time Magazine, The Rolling Stone, and Life Magazine.

photography and interim department head of art, says people might recognize these photographers’ work, but not realize they are alumni. “This exhibit gives our alumni photographers a chance to show some of their work,” Godwin said. Godwin noted that one of the most well known persons to graduate from the photography program is Mark Seliger (BS ‘81), former chief of photography at The Rolling Stone.

Exhibiters included Seliger, Neal Farris, David Hathcox (MA ‘82), Paul Howell (BS ‘82), Scott Hunt (BS ‘90), Bryan Kuntz (BA ‘79), John Madere (BS ‘77), James McGoon (BS ‘79), Greg Milano (BS ‘87, MS ‘90) Dennis Murphy (BS ‘77), Earl Nottingham (BS ‘78), Matthew Savins (BS ‘78), Chris Shinn, and Danny Turner (BS ‘82).

Dr. Samuel Cochran

“Activity fosters energy,” Samuel Cochran was quoted as saying three years ago. “My age never enters my mind. Mostly, it’s what can I do with my body?” Samuel, 81, was a psychology professor at the University from 1969 through 1985. He died in June. While on the faculty, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and spent a year teaching at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. A World War II veteran, Samuel was the only survivor in a B-26 that was shot down over France during the summer of 1944. He was saved by German soldiers and sent to a hospital in Paris. With the help of the French Underground, he escaped from the hospitaland survived by eating pigeons until he was rescued. From 1986 to 2001, he taught at the University of Texas in San Antonio, where he conducted research on nonagenarians, people who are 90-99 years old. In his late sixties, Samuel took up cycling and participated in the Texas Senior Olympics several times. If he wasn’t cycling, he was doing aerobics or parasailing. At age 76, he made a cross country trek on bicycle from Oregon to Virginia and recorded his experiences in a book.

Maybeth King Wheat

Maybeth Wheat (BA ’39, MA ‘63) was a longtime schoolteacher who taught at Liberty-Hill School, DeKalb High School, Spring Hill School, and Hubbard School, where she retired in 1977. She died last August. During the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, she was the director of the HeadStart program in Bowie County. She is survived by two daughters, Frances Wheat McGregor (BS ’68, MS ’69) and Johnette Wheat Tinsley (BS ’72). Frances remembers her mother attending classes for her master’s degree. “She and several other DeKalb area teachers would get up at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings to make early classes after teaching all week. Then they spent their summers commuting to classes.”
