The Dinner Dance
chapter of the Alumni Association is more than just a one-night
dinner and dance. A group of approximately 25 members gathered frequently
throughout the two-year planning process in order to make sure all
arrangements had been made and any complications planned for.
The event usually
runs for a two-day period in the spring of even numbered years.
Friday normally starts with a golf tournament and informal night
out. Saturday is marked with mini-reunions of the different social
clubs and Greeks. The main event is the big dinner and dance held
on Saturday night. A musical group, or two, generally highlight
the evening and lead the dancers onto the floor.
This seems like
a bit of fun for Greeks and clubbers, but for the committee this
means many meetings and several trips to and from the selected hotel
site and golf course. In addition, committee members call and write
friends and fellow social clubbers to encourage their attendance.
This volunteer service can quickly turn into a full-time job.
In addition,
to the fun weekend that the planning committee organizes, they also
do good deeds on campus. Over the course of ten years, a total of
$10,833.51 has been donated to the Alumni Scholarship Fund and the
Alumni Office. This has certainly turned into a wonderful way to
support the University and to have a great time while doing it.
The dinner dance
was first held in 1990 in order to gather social clubbers, predecessors
to the Greek system, for a reunion and fun weekend. Traditionally,
social clubs held a big dinner dance each year. Through the years,
over 1,830 have participated in the dinner dance events.
