A&M-Commerce
student Eric Banks is one step closer to his goal of playing professionally
in an orchestra.
A Garland senior,
Banks has been accepted to The Juilliard School in New York, N.Y.
The music performance major, who anticipates graduating with his
bachelor’s degree from A&M-Commerce in August, will begin work
on a master’s degree at Juilliard in September.
A bass trombonist,
Banks will study with Don Harwood, bass trombonist with the New
York Philharmonic.

Jimmy Clark, who
teaches trombone at A&M-Commerce and is Banks’ instructor, said
he is pleased Banks has been selected to attend the New York school.
"There were 15 bass trombonists who auditioned this year. Only
one was accepted and this was Eric Banks of Texas A&M University-Commerce,"
Clark said.
Banks, who auditioned
in March, played two solos and several orchestra excerpts for the
Juilliard brass faculty. The audition lasted about 20 minutes, according
to the A&M-Commerce student.
Clark described
the audition process as "rigorous. Although anyone can audition,
those accepted into the school have to go through a difficult audition
process and are voted on by the faculty of the school."
In his four
years at A&M-Commerce, Banks has been a member of the Trombone
Choir, University Wind Symphony, and "Pride" Marching
Band.
Banks will be
one of four A&M-Commerce students who has attended Juilliard
in recent years, Clark said. Others from A&M-Commerce are Jim
John, who studied music composition, and trombonists Chris Clark
and Garnett Livingston.
Known for "taking
the finest musicians from around the world and producing the world’s
top artists, a degree from Juilliard doesn’t guarantee success in
the music world. However, more musicians graduating from The Juilliard
School than any other music school find a place in the music world
making a living doing what they like to do most—perform," Clark
commented.
