E. Thayne King, director of Housing, said, “The instructors
for this institute are some of the most highly respected residence
life leaders in the nation.” Hayley is also this year’s
sole recipient of the Bob Cooke Scholarship from the Southwest
Association of College and University Housing Officers, which
covered $500 of her expenses to attend last month’s
annual conference in Las Vegas. Having served as assistant
housing director since 2000, Hayley got her start in the housing
profession in 1997 as hall director for West Halls. |

Thomas Wallis (MED
’97) has been named principal of Mabank (TX) High School.
He had been an assistant principal at Mesquite, TX.
Jarrett Blessing (BS ’97, BSIS
’00) is teaching at Decatur (TX) Middle School. He recently
captured top money in steer roping at rodeos in Cheyenne, WY and
Hillside, KS. The win moves him into 15th place on the Pro Rodeo
Cowboy’s Association standings. Jarrett was the PRCA’s
2002 Rookie of the Year.
Krista Leann Boozer (MS ’98) married
Byron Keith Wilson June 21 in Athens, TX. She is a teacher in Garland
ISD.
Cecily Luft Younger (BS ’99) received
her MS degree in human development from Cornell University. In 2000
she began a five-year teaching scholarship at Cornell, where she
will continue to teach in the Department of Human Development while
expanding her master’s thesis toward a doctorate.
Kris Taylor (BS ’00) is in his
third year coaching varsity football at Boyd High School.
Joshua Dean Shaul (BS ’02) married
A&M-Commerce student Katie Jarrell on June 21 in Bonham, TX.
Josh Craven (BS ’03) has received
a full scholarship to attend Texas Tech School of Law. He and his
wife, Michele, are parents of a 2-year-old son, Will.

Nancy M. Burnett (BS ’38)—7-15-03.
She earned an English degree from the University when it was known
as East Texas State Teachers College.
Hollis R. Sanders (BS ’38)—6-28-03.
He was an administrator for Austin ISD and in 1978 was named their
Administrator of the Year.
Frieda Miller (BA ’42)—6-4-03.
She taught 34 years, 26 of them as a first-grade teacher in Kilgore,
TX.
Allen J. Herndon (BS ’46, MS ’48)—A
Farmersville resident, he had majored in history and received his
master’s in educational administration.
Reba Farrow Anglin (BS ’48, MS
’54)—7-12-03. She taught fourth grade for 17 years in
Eanes, TX.
Frances Jean Dear (BS ’48, MA ’52)—7-25-03.
She was a retired teacher and principal for the Mineola (TX) Primary
School and head of the children’s department for the First
United Methodist Church in Mineola.
Charles V. “Rock” Cornman
(BS ’50)—8-1-03. When he retired from Texas Instruments
in 1979, he taught junior high in Richardson, TX.
Robert B. Beaver (BS ’51)—6-18-03.
In 1985 he retired after 35 years with the Texas Department of Human
Services.
James A. Duncan (BS ’52). He was
a plant and pest quarantine supervisor for the U.S. Department of
Agriculture where he received numerous commendations.
Robert Clardy Moore (BS ’54). He
majored in health & P.E. at the University.
Leroy Earl Daniels (BBA ’56)—6-3-03.
He was Public Works Auditor for the City of Houston.
Albert L. Bond (BA ’59)—9-19-90.
He was an elementary education major.
Mary Louise Sterling (BS ’59)—7-5-03.
She taught in Paris, TX, for 20 years and volunteered in civic activities.
Her son, Charles, was a Distinguished Alumnus of A&M-Commerce
in 1999.
John Chester Davis III (BS ’60,
MED ’61, EDD ’72)—6-14-03. He was a professor
of education at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Ruth C. Petersen (MED ’61)—4-26-03.
She taught in the Dallas ISD for 33 years before retiring in 1985.
She was active in the Texas Women’s Bowling Association.
John W. Duress (BS ’63)—6-29-03.
He retired from LaGloria Oil & Gas Co after 33 years and had
gone into farming and ranching. He was the owner of Century 21 Suburban
Realty in Whitehouse, TX.
Patsy Ann Taylor White (MS ’66)—6-9-03.
She was among the first staff selected at Grayson County College,
where she was librarian for 19 years.
Martha Finche Daspit (BS ’66, MS
’69)—2-7-01. She was a music major.
Patsy Ann Scott Peveto (MS ’66)—6-26-03.
For more than 35 years, she worked as a teacher and librarian in
Richardson, Mesquite, Whitesboro and Commerce, TX, as well as Lawton,
OK.
Patsy Burnett Campbell (MED ’67)—She
had a master’s in counseling & guidance and was a resident
of Broken Bow, OK.
Larry Layne Anderson (BS ’67)—7-4-03.
He was an Air Force veteran who completed more than 1,100 combat
sorties over hostile territory and received the Air Medal and Distinguished
Flying Cross. He was assistant superintendent at Gatesville, TX
and superintendent at Blooming Grove (TX) ISD.
Valla Faye Robinson (MED ’68)—7-30-03.
She taught at Winnsboro, TX, for 41 years.
Joy Mary Groves McGill (BS ’68,
MED ’75)—6-15-03. She was a resident of Windermere,
FL.
Paul Relf Osborne (BS ’70)—6-26-03.
He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 18 years.
William “Whit” Riley (BBA
’70)—5-13-03. He was president of ABC Transportation
and was listed in Who’s Who in America.
Jimmy L. Young (BS ’71)—7-5-03.
He was owner of Young Chevron Oil Co. in Gilmer, TX.
Ruth B. Miller (MS ’75)—2-25-03.
She lived in Little Rock, AR, and was a retired state librarian.
Robbie Scantlin Babbitt (MS ’78)—5-28-03.
She retired after 24 years from Fort Worth ISD where she was a math
teacher at Eastern Hills High School.
Dr. Lynda Gayle Whatley (BS ’79)—3-31-03.
She was a director for Mary Kay Cosmetics.
Ruth Crawford (BS ’85, MED ’90)—7-9-03.
She was retired from the Tyler ISD after 24 years and in 2002 was
honored as one of the 120-year-old district’s 120 Heroes.
Sara McNew Tyler (EDD ’96)—8-9-03.
She taught education at Tarleton State University.

Jane Meador Cook—7-4-03. She was
an active volunteer in Mesquite, TX.
Bill Dunlap—7-4-03. He was retired
from E-Systems in Greenville, TX.
Bonnie Lay Wilkinson Irwin—6-25-03.
She was a volunteer in the oncology and radiation department at
Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas for 13 years.
Thelma Cassell Morgan—12-10-02.
Before becoming a wife and mother, she was a student in the Training
School and at ET.
Brenda Kaye Douglas Packer—7-03-03.
She was a registered nurse who took graduate courses here while
she was a school nurse and teacher for Dallas ISD.
Obie L. Phillips Sr.—7-21-03. A
school administrator, he retired in 1981 from Neches (TX) ISD.
LeWayne “Rocky” Rhodes—5-17-03.
He was a retired printer and restaurant manager.
Sam Carter Rives. He was a 32nd degree Mason and worked in the auto
business, managing several Texas dealerships.
James Buck Russell—7-8-03. He was
a WWII veteran who became a teacher at the Green B. Trimble Technical
High School in Fort Worth ISD.
Brett Young—6-1-03. He was 26 and
a resident of Sulphur Springs, TX.
