Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

The Graduate Record Exam is often requires of individuals applying to graduate schools.  If you are unsure as to whether you are required to take the GRE or not, please contact the Graduate School you are planning on attending.  Registration information can be found on-line at www.gre.org or by calling 1-800-GRE-CALL.

GRE General Test:

Prospective graduate applicants to TAMU – Commerce take the General Test. GRE test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study. The scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and aid in evaluating grades and recommendations.The GRE General Test is a computer-based exam which measures skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not necessarily related to any particular field of study.  The test is composed of analytical writing, verbal, and quantitative sections. 

GRE General Test Dates and Fees:

The Computer based General Tests is currently NOT administered at TAMU - Commerce.  The GRE General Test is currently being offered at other locations at this time.  Contact GRE for more information concerning test locations, dates, and fees.

Subject Area Test:

Prospective graduate applicants may be required to take the GRE Subject Tests.  The Subject Tests measure achievement in specific subject areas and assume undergraduate majors or extensive background in these disciplines.  GRE test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study.

The scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and aid in the evaluation of grades and recommendations. Some Subject Tests yield subscores that can indicate the strengths and weaknesses of individual students' preparation and may be useful for guidance and placement purposes.
The paper-pencil Subject Tests are offered in 8 subject areas:

  • Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Computer Science
  • Literature in English
  • Mathematics
  • Psychology

Texas A&M - Commerce does not currently require the GRE subject tests.  If you have questions about your need for the GRE subject tests, contact the institution you are planning to attend.

GRE Subject Test Dates and Fees:

The paper-pencil based Subject Tests are administered at TAMU - Commerce one time a year (November).  Contact GRE for more information concerning test dates and fees.

What to Expect on the day of the Exam:

  • Report to McDowell Business Administration Building Room 315 on the date and time for which you are scheduled on your admission ticket.
  • A valid photo ID is required.

Bring these items to the test center:

Do NOT bring*

  • cellular phones
  • watch with audible alarm
  • mechanical pencils
  • pens
  • textbooks
  • foreign language dictionaries
  • dictionaries
  • notes or other aids
  • scratch paper
  • highlighters
  • Compass, protractor, ruler, or any other aids
  • pagers or beepers
  • photographic devices
  • CD or tape players
  • reading material
  • food, drink (including water)

*If any of the prohibited items are brought to the center they will be taken up and turned off (if necessary).  The center is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
