Dear faculty member:

We are pleased to invite you and your mathematics colleagues to join us on Saturday, November 11, 2000 at our Metroplex Commuter Facility in Mesquite, as the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University - Commerce hosts OpenHouse-2000.  On this day we will meet with area high school and middle school teachers, and present a few hours of mathematics-related activities and discussion about the teaching profession.  OpenHouse-2000 is for teachers only (we have a “MathDay” event for students in the spring).  We decided to host this year’s event in Mesquite, at the Metroplex facility, since it seemed to work well that way last year.  The facility is located at 2600 Motley Drive, just off interstate I30, about 1.4 miles south of Eastfield College (click here to see map).

The schedule of activities is as follows:

·9:45am-9:55am: arrival in the Mesquite commuter facility.  Go to room 132 to register; some computer demonstrations will be set up in a nearby computer lab*.

·10am: Welcome by Dr. Stuart Anderson, Head of the Department of Mathematics, in 132

·10:10am: Lecture by Dr. Rick Kreminski on “Polynomials - gazillions of applications”

·10:55am:  Lecture by Dr. Italo Simonelli on “Random numbers and simulation using your calculator”

·11:40am:  Lecture by Heidi Staebler on “Geometry in art and culture”

·12:25pm:  Lunch, free to OpenHouse-2000 participants.

·1pm:  A cornucopia of computer calculations: various faculty will demonstrate several short tidbits on the computer* (including even more applications of polynomials).

·2:00pm: Round-table: Topics to include “What can your local university do to help you in your profession?”; A&M-Commerce Master’s program for teachers in math education

*- By the way, while many OpenHouse-2000 activities include the use of a computer, no computer skills are assumed - we’ll show you everything you need to know.

Come join us for OpenHouse-2000!   Please RSVP at the phone number or email address below by November 10.  Include your phone number and/or email address when making your reservation.
