Step by Step Guidelines for Submitting Material to the Mayo Review

These initial steps describe the generic process for any work (textual or artistic). For information about who can submit, and deadlines, please check our web site at www.tamu-commerce.edu/coas/litlang/mayoguides.htm.

Cover Page

  1. One the first line, put the name (and spelling that you want to be placed in The Mayo Review ) and if different, put your real name in parenthesis after that.
  2. Include your student id #, so that we can verify your status as a student.
  3. One the next several lines, include your mailing address and phone number (include both school and permanent if they are different).
  4. If possible, then include an email address where we can contact you should there be an questions about your work.
  5. Provide a Table of Contents of the work being submitted (on the same page is fine). All work must have a title of some kind and the genre of that work must be specified. Genres include artwork, photography, fiction, essay, drama, and poetry. If you have questions about what genre to list a submission as, please contact Dr. Robin Reid.
  6. On the same page, include a short biography of less than 100 words. This may be edited for grammar and length.

Actual Works Submitted

A. All Works

  1. Include 2 copies of each work.
  2. Include a diskette containing these files saved in Word or RTF format.
  3. Please limit the number of submissions to at most: 2 plays, fiction, or essays; 10 poems; and 3 works of art. It is possible to submit the maximum in all categories, but please do not submit more than the limit specified in each genre.

B. Written Works

  1. Do not include your name any other place than on the cover page. So that the readers cannot be biased in reading your work, it is important not to include your name.
  2. Be sure to provide a title of the work and page numbers if the work is longer than a page.
  3. Use a readable font in a size sufficient to be read. Please submit fiction double spaced for the ease of reading.
  4. Because of the nature of The Mayo Review, long works are unlikely to be published unless a cutting is taken from that longer work.

C. Artistic Works

  1. The journal prints in black and white with an approx. page size of 7.5 x 5"
  2. Submit an original and 2 photocopies of the work with a label on the back which indicates the title of that work. Do not place your name anywhere on the artwork.

What to Do with Complete Submissions

  1. 1. Take them to Dr. Robin Reid's office in the Hall of Languages, Room 125.
  2. 2. Be sure to turn in submissions on or before December 3, 2001.

Biography: Tim Hopp does things quietly. We are eagerly anticipating his upcoming epic poem, "Chicken Shit is Explosive." He said, when interviewed about the sense of his poetry, "To quote the great John Denver, 'We didn't get a lot sleep but we had a lot of fun on Grandma's featherbed...."
