Students desiring to teach in elementary school should select the interdisciplinary studies major with an academic specialization.

Specialization in ESL (English as a Second Language)

For Interdisciplinary Studies Majors (Elementary Teaching). Required courses in the specialization (18 semester hours):

  • English 201
  • English 358
  • English 457
  • English 462

Six semester hours from:

  • English 301
  • English 331 or English 424
  • One half of student teaching in an ESL classroom.

Specialization in Bilingual

For Interdisciplinary Studies Majors (Elementary Teaching). Required courses in the specialization (21 semester hours):

  • English 301 or English 331
  • English 358
  • English 457
  • English 462
  • Spanish 331
  • Spanish 332
  • Spanish 341 or Spanish 354
  • One half of student teaching in a Bilingual classroom.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement

  • English 358
  • English 301 or English 331
  • English 457 and English 462
  • Student teaching in ESL or one year's teaching experience in an ESL or Bilingual classroom
  • Pass the ESL ExCET
