| The Department of Literature
and Languages, Texas A&M University-Commerce, is now offering a 19 credit-hour
Certificate in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
Course work for the Certificate includes the department's five basic Applied
Linguistics/ESL courses: |

In addition,
a candidate would take a one-hour Practicum and one elective course (3 credit
hours) chosen from the following courses in the Texas A&M University-Commerce
Departments of Literature and Languages, Elementary Education, or Secondary
and Higher Education:

A maximum of
three semester hours of TESOL-related graduate coursework completed
at another institution and approved by the Head of the Department
of Literature and Languages may also be transferred and counted
as the elective toward this Certificate.

The Practicum
|
|
This is a one-credit hour
TESOL-specific practicum. Practicums will be arranged through the Department
of Literature and Languages once a student has completed fifteen (15) credit
hours. In-service teachers should consult the TESOL faculty about arrangements
for the Practicum.
In addition to the enhanced
professional status such a Certificate will bring, the Certificate will enable
the holder to meet the 18-hour SACS requirement to teach at the College level.
Courses are offered at the Mesquite Metroplex Center, the TAMU-Commerce main
campus, other locations in Dallas, and through Distance Education. There is
no campus residency requirement for this Certificate, and it is available to
degree- or non-degree-seeking students.
