| DOMAIN
II - RESPONDING TO LITERATURE AND OTHER FORMS OF EXPRESSION |
| Competency
008 |
| The English teacher understands
reading and listening as active, constructive processes, guides students as
they cultivate the ability to derive pleasure from written and oral communication,
and enables students to make meaningful connections between literature and their
own lives. The English teacher understands that readers construct meanings through
their interactions with written and oral messages. By helping students relate
literature, film, and other creative expressions to their own lives and to the
contemporary world, the teacher enables them to enjoy language as a valuable
tool for the imaginative exploration of life. |
| |
| Competency
009 |
| The English teacher understands
and analyzes various forms of written and oral expression and helps students
become more competent learners by using strategies for interpretive and critical
reading and listening. The English teacher analyzes and evaluates information
presented in a variety of expressive and expository discourse (e.g., magazines,
novels, autobiographies, movies, radio programs) and facilitates students' critical
thinking (e.g., drawing inferences from a political speech, comparing conflicting
points of view from editorials) by fostering analytical and evaluative listening
and reading abilities. |
|
|
| Competency
010 |
| The English teacher selects
and encourages students to select literature and other materials that reflect
the diversity of human thought and expression and that provide students with
meaningful opportunities for personal and cultural exploration. The English
teacher is familiar with an extensive repertoire of texts, including the traditions
of Western literature, and knows how to assess their complexity and thus their
appropriateness and appeal. The teacher recognizes the personal, political,
and social conflicts that can arise in the selection of texts; understands how
to meaningfully integrate material from different historical, cultural, and
ethnic perspectives; and helps students broaden and develop their own criteria
for the selection of literature. |
| |
| Competency
011 |
| The English teacher understands
the role of form in constructing and communicating meaning for particular audiences
and purposes and fosters this understanding in students. The English teacher
understands diverse forms of written expression (e.g., drama, essays, letters)
and understands similarities and differences among genres. The teacher relates
particular works of literature to their distinctive characteristics (e.g., the
use of the chorus to comment on the action in classical drama), and relates
form to historical context (e.g., the rise of the novel in the eighteenth century).
The teacher fosters student understanding of literary elements and structures,
works with students to analyze specific literary works and general literary
forms, and guides students to appreciate and experiment with the relationship
between form and content in the expression of ideas for particular purposes
and audiences. |
|
|
| Competency
012 |
| The English teacher understands
the expressive dimension of language and fosters this understanding in students
by helping them explore how literary techniques and devices evoke various responses
from readers. The English teacher analyzes how writers use language and style
and guides students to understand that literary devices (e.g., sound patterns,
connotation, ambiguity, figurative language, symbolism) help to portray character,
establish a mood or tone, create sensory impressions, or convey emotional effects.
In working with students through the interpretation of various texts, the teacher
promotes student engagement with literary works and provides opportunities for
students to develop their own self-expression through the use of literary techniques.

| Competency
013 |
The English teacher understands
written expression as an aspect of culture, works with students to analyze relationships
between literature and society, and fosters multicultural understanding through
the exploration of diverse texts. The English teacher analyzes literary works
as part of a literary tradition as well as expressions of cultural styles, values,
and ideas. The teacher demonstrates and helps students understand how literature
and other forms of creative expression both reflect and shape the culture and
society from which they emerge (e.g., the relationships between literature and
history). The teacher guides students to approach their own culture and the
cultures of others through exploration of literary traditions, helping students
value and respect the differences and similarities among people from a variety
of cultures. |
