SERIALS - (Not the breakfast food) An item which is published periodically, with a unifying title, as infrequently as once every 5 or 10 years, and as frequently as daily, and intended to continue indefinitely. They can look like a regular book or pamphlet, or be a magazine or newspaper (periodicals - items published more frequently than once a year). They can also be in any format: paper, microforms, electronic, etc.
The Serials Dept. is responsible for all functions related to obtaining and making serials available in the Library. These include: Ordering, working with invoices, cataloging, check-in, claiming unreceived issues, binding and maintaining holdings records in the Library Catalog. The Serials Dept. also does the initial receiving and processing of Texas state documents, as well as, receiving, cataloging, and processing (except for spine-labeling) of the state-adopted textbook collections. The bindery unit of the Serials Dept. also handles the binding needs of all materials held by the Library. In addition, the Dept. is responsible for the handling and dispensation of the periodicals included in the Library's Gifts & Exchange Program.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to budgetary constraints, at this time, the library can only consider requests for new subscriptions if the department that is requesting the new title is willing to cancel an existing subscription(s) of equal or greater value. Such swaps must be approved by the department's Library representative and the Library.
