Medline

Database overview

Database summary

Medline, produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, is widely recognized as the premiere index to biomedical literature. The database contains citations to articles from over 3,600 journals with abstracts for about 67% of the items. Other types of literature are covered as well.

Subjects covered include medicine, dentistry, nursing, veterinary medicine, and other fields as they relate to the medical sciences. Some special searches are available, such as molecular sequence, gene symbol, and chemical substance.

Accessing Medline

Medline can be accessed from the Library Databases web page or at the computers in the Reference Department. To search the database through FirstSearch, log onto FirstSearch and select Medline from the list of databases.

Another option is to choose the Medline link from the Library Databases web page which allows you to search Medline using the interface provided by the National Library of Medicine.

Note to database beginners: We recommend that new database users try Medline through FirstSearch before trying PubMed, as many people find FirstSearch easier to use.
