Database overview

Database description

JSTOR is a unique database that contains complete articles from journals in various subject areas. JSTOR differs from most full-text databases in that it focuses on older articles rather than newer ones. Most journals in the database start with the first issue and stop between 2 to 5 years ago (arrangements with each journal publisher determine this "moving date wall"). Newer issues are added, but the database will always remain 2-5 years behind the currently published issues.

JSTOR will be expanded over time to include more journals in various fields. Currently the database holds over 100 journals in the following areas:

Accessing JSTOR

JSTOR can be accessed in the library from the computers in the Reference Area, or by clicking on the JSTOR link from the Library Databases web page.

Using JSTOR

There are two different ways to find articles in JSTOR: browsing and searching.

To browse, click on Browse the Journals. From there you can choose the name of the desired journal, then navigate down through the volumes and issues until you locate your article.

To search, click on Search JSTOR. A search interface will appear where keywords, titles, authors, and subjects can be typed in. Searches can also be limited by date, journal, field of research, and type of article (such as regular articles, reviews, or opinion pieces).

Search results are usually returned in order of relevancy. The articles that best match your search will be displayed first. There is also an option to display either the newest or the oldest articles first. Either the citation or full-text can be viewed, starting at the first page or at the "page of first match" (the first page to contain one of your search terms).

In both browse and search modes, you can navigate around the articles and results list by using the navigation toolbar on the left-hand side of the screen.

Be aware that the articles on the screen will be displayed as image files rather than regular text. Because of this, text cannot be copied. Image files can be printed or downloaded by using the procedures described below.

Printing from JSTOR

Unlike most of our other databases, JSTOR articles cannot be printed directly from your web browser as you view them. If you try to print this way, you'll run into a number of problems:

  1. you can only print one page of the article at a time
  2. an extra, near-empty page will be included for each page (costing you extra print money)
  3. several lines on the bottom of each page will be cut off, making the printout almost useless

To print copies of articles, JSTOR has provided special print files in various formats:

Our library supports printing in the PDF format, and the program is already installed on the library computers. If you wish to use the JPRINT format on your computer, locate information to help you on the JSTOR web site (http://www.jstor.org). If you are accessing JSTOR over a modem (rather than a direct network connection), you may want to use an economy mode to save time.

Once you have located the article you want, you can access the print function in two ways:

Downloading from JSTOR

To download copies of articles, JSTOR has provided special files in various formats:

Once you have located the article you want, you can access the download function in two ways:

JSTOR will ask which format you wish to use and provide instructions on how to save the file to your computer. Please note that these files may be too large to fit on a floppy... you may want to try the PDF economy mode in this case, as the files are much smaller.
