Hoover's Online is produced by Hoover's Inc. The database is divided into six general areas: Companies & Industries; Money; Career Development; News Center; Business Travel; and the Purchasing Center. The heart of Hoover's Online is the company information found in the "Companies & Industries" section. This section includes five categories of information: Company Capsule; Company Profile; Financials; News & Analysis; and Industry. Hoover's Online is searchable by company name, ticker symbol, keyword, industry, location, number of employees, sales, individuals' last names, and company type.
Capsule - is a snapshot of the company, including some historical information. Each Capsule includes the basic non-financial information found in the Profile, but also includes links to Capsules of the company's top three competitors.
Profile - includes information on public and private companies in the US and worldwide. Companies are chosen based on four criteria:
Each Profile provides: a thumbnail description; company history; officers names; address, telephone, fax numbers, and web URL; the company's products, services, and brand names; divisions, subsidiaries, and joint ventures; the company's chief competitors; and financial data (going back as far as ten years). Profiles also include links to free and for-fee information created by third parties, including brokerage reports, market research information, and insider trading information.
Financials - includes three years and five quarters of financial reports, information from 12 months of SEC filings, current stock data, a performance chart for the preceding 12 months, and links to free and for-fee investment information provided by third parties.
News & Analysis - includes headlines from the most recent articles published about the company, as well as an archive of older news stories and select new stories.
Industry - lists the primary industry/industries for the company and all pertinent SIC codes.
Hoover's Online is available in the library's Reference Department, or through the Library Databases web page.
Since Hoover's Online is a web-based product, the search interface screens are subject to change. (This information is correct as of September 2000.) Along with the company profiles and capsules mentioned previously, this database has several other features, including:
IPO Central - locates Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) by industry, underwriter, or location. It can be browsed alphabetically. Other IPO-related features include: Latest Filings; Latest Pricings; IPO News; IPO Scorecard, which gives numbers of IPOs by industry and rates the best and worst performing IPOs; IPO Statistics; and the Beginner's Guide.
List of Lists - provides links to external lists from a variety of sources that rank companies and people in a number of ways, including size, sales, reputation, and many other criteria.
Power Tool - locates sales leads, business contacts, investment ideas, and vital competitive intelligence. It searches by location, number of employees, industry, sales, and/or company type. Users can combine more than one type of search to create a targeted list of companies (e.g. heavy construction companies in Texas with more than $500 million in annual sales).
Additional company financial information can be found in Lexis-Nexis, as well as on the free web sites Corporate Information, Market Guide, and Zack's.
