Basic description

FirstSearch is a collection of databases provided by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), all using the same FirstSearch interface. Read below for more information on the base package databases with open campus access.

ArticleFirst is a database of article citations covering over 12,500 journals in the areas of science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture. The information provided about each article is minimal, containing only what you would find on the contents page of a magazine or journal. There are over 4 million entries dating back to 1990.

Biological & Agricultural Index contains citations for journal articles from 1983 to the present. Compiled from 250 scientific journals in the biological and agricultural sciences, there are 745,000 items in the database. Topics covered include agricultural economics, animal sciences, botany, entomology, environmental science, food science, horticulture, immunology, microbiology, soil science, veterinary medicine, and much more.

ContentsFirst contains the table of contents for issues from over 12,500 journals in a variety of fields. There are 595,000 entries dating back to 1990. Please note that each entry is an entire table-of-contents, rather than a single article citation.

ECO contains citations for scholarly journal articles on a wide variety of topics. A special feature of this database is the ability to limit searches to a specific discipline, such as education or agriculture. There are 130,000 entries dating back to 1995. (Please note: We have full-text access to only 52 of the 1300 journals in this database. To see only the full-text articles, limit journals to Journals Subscribed To.)

GenderWatch contains the full-text of articles and reports focused on gender and women's issues. Topics covered include childbirth, child care, sexual harassment, eating disorders, and the impact of gender on various aspects of life and culture. There are 55,000 articles in the database dating back to 1974.

General Science Abstracts contains citations and abstracts for articles published in 150 journals and magazines. The database covers a wide variety of scientific subjects, such as astronomy, biology, computers, earth sciences, and health. There are 619,000 entries dating back to 1984 (abstracts start in 1993).

GPO Monthly Catalog contains citations for over 500,000 documents published by the U.S. Government Printing Office dating back to 1976. The database covers a wide variety of subjects in such forms as Congressional reports, judiciary materials, and documents produced by state agencies.

Humanities Abstracts indexes periodicals in archaeology, art, film, journalism, linguistics, music, philosophy, religion, history, literature, and other topics in the humanities. Provided by H.W. Wilson, this database contains 438,000 articles from 400 periodicals. Basic indexing goes back to 1984, and abstracts are included starting in 1994.

MLA contains 1.3 million citations to articles in the areas of literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore. Over 6,000 worldwide journals and book series are covered dating back to 1963.

NetFirst is a directory to a variety of internet resources, such as web sites, discussion groups, and electronic publications. There are 105,000 entries covering a broad range of topics. In addition to keyword searching, you can also browse the subject hierarchy.

PapersFirst is an index to papers presented at conferences and meetings. It contains roughly 2.4 million papers dating back to 1993, and is international in scope.

Proceedings contains citations for published conference proceedings on a variety of topics. The database consists of 74,000 works dating back to 1993, and a list of papers presented at each conference is often included in the record.

Readers' Guide Abstracts provides indexing and abstracts for popular magazines published in the U.S. and Canada. This database contains 1.1 million entries covering a wide variety of topics dating back to 1983.

Social Sciences Abstracts covers English-language periodicals in the fields of sociology, anthropology, geography, economics, political science, and law. There are 595,000 entries in the database compiled from 400 journals. Basic indexing dates back to 1983, and abstracts begin in 1994.

Sociological Abstracts covers journal articles, books, conference papers, and dissertations in the field of sociology. Over 1,500 journals are indexed starting in 1963 (abstracts start in 1974).

UnionLists is a database that lists journals held by OCLC member libraries. It is mainly used to determine if another library holds a specific issue of a journal. (This database does NOT list journal articles.)

WilsonSelect is a small database containing the full text of articles from roughly 800 journals. A variety of topics are covered including science, business, social sciences, humanities, and others. There are 321,000 entries dating back to 1994. Updated weekly.

World Almanac contains brief facts and answers on a variety of topics. The full text is included for the following books: The World Almanac and Book of Facts, The World Almanac of the U.S.A., The World Almanac of U.S. Politics, and The World Almanac for Kids. The database is updated annually and contains 6,000 entries.

World Book Encyclopedia is an online version of this 21-volume encyclopedia. Updated annually, there are over 17,500 full-text articles covering a wide variety of topics. Most articles contain a bibliography, and many articles also include graphics, tables, or study aids. Like print encyclopedias, some articles are quite long and contain a great deal of useful information.

WorldCat is a catalog of books and other materials held in OCLC member libraries around the world. There are roughly 40 million items in this database dating back to the 12th century, and each record contains a list of libraries that may have the item. This is a useful database for verifying bibliographic information, such as the title or author of a book.


For advanced research

Dissertation Abstracts is an important database containing citations and abstracts for dissertations and theses produced at accredited institutions. Basic citations go back as far as 1861, and abstracting of dissertations and theses started in 1980 and 1988 respectively. Approximately 1.5 million dissertations and theses are listed. (To access Dissertation Abstracts, please ask for help from the Reference staff.)
