Post –Disaster Procedures
After recovery, using reports and feedback from the Disaster Team, the Recovery Director will draft a report, including photographs, to the Disaster Team. The Disaster Team members will examine the report and consider the effectiveness of the Disaster Plan – what worked? what didn’t? The Disaster Team will recommend revision to the Disaster Plan, if necessary.
Plan Review
The recovery of books and records after exposure to a water-based or fire emergency can be successful and cost-effective if staff and management are prepared ahead of time and react in a timely way. If decisions and actions are delayed more than a few hours, collections may be lost or so seriously damaged that recovery becomes a major undertaking. The key steps for a satisfactory emergency recovery include:
Timely initial response
Educated staff
Committed management
Effective communications
Quick, informed decisions
The Disaster Team with the Recovery Director as chair, will meet at least once a year to review the Disaster Plan. The review will include: confirmation of information contained in the plan, members and telephone numbers, and the emergency response agreement with BMS-CAT. Also, identification of collection priorities such as newly acquired special collections, availability of on-site supplies and off-site supplies, updated floor plans, and other changes/corrections to The Plan that are needed as determined by the Disaster Team and Recovery Director.
