Serials Department/Bindery Information

The Bindery section of the Serials Department is focused on improving the physical condition of worn or damaged print materials in the Library. In a modestly equipped area of the Library, their most commonly applied conservation treatments include:

Repair of backing and casing of books
Endsheet reinforcement
Hinge tightening
Aquiring and tipping-in replacement pages
Pamphlet binding
Spiral binding
Protective enclosure construction
Paper repair and cleaning

Though unable to repair or rebind books from personal collections, staff of the Bindery section are available to provide advice on appropriate conservation treatments. Also, the University of Texas at Arlington Library's Collection Maintenance and Preservation Services has several excellent links to information regarding care and repair of books, etc. (including things on saving wet books and getting rid of the moldy smell in books).

Bindery Information

The James G. Gee Library contracts with Heckman Bindery, Inc., of North Manchester, IN, for binding of periodicals, primarily, and library books that are beyond our ability to repair in-house.

Bindery for Periodicals

Periodical issues are pulled monthly from the current periodicals area to be sent to the commercial binder. They are checked for completeness, put in order, and a binding information slip is printed. The bindery picks up the boxes of issues to be bound and delivers the newly bound copies approximately every four weeks. When the shipment is sent, a list(s) of items currently at the bindery is produced [link here, if possible]. The shipments are unpacked as soon as possible after delivery. Before they can be sent to the bound periodical pre-shelving area, they must be stamped, targeted, and the volumes must be checked to be certain they are properly bound, accurately labeled, and that all items were returned from the bindery. The summary holdings statement is corrected to reflect that the volume is now bound and the kardex in Reference is appropriately marked. Issues are due back approximately four weeks after the shipment date in the record. Once volumes have been unpacked, patrons may request that individual volumes be rush processed.
