GOALS: ____James G. Gee Library___________________________________
(Department or College)
Fall__96___through Summer__97___
Objective Persons Responsible Time Line Effectiveness Measure
Goal #__1_. Goal Statement: Continue to increase access to electronic sources
| Expand access to products on the LAN within the library. | library director, reference librarians, data processing staff | Spring 1997 | 1. Increased access to FirstSearch core databases . Usage increased x% over 1995/96 will become the measure of success. In 1996/97 we used 2% of the Phoenix Group First Search Resources; this is a major increase from the .1% usage in 1995/96. Subscription price, therefore, went from $100/year to $3,025/year for the base package.
2. Added 3 FirstSearch Databases to campus-wide access list - September 1996 Usage in 1996/97: Books in Print: 2630 searches in 1996/97 Pro CD (combined): 1150 searches in 1996/97. If price had stayed the same we would have considered retention in 1997/98, however, the subscription price tripled - we canceled. Price per search was less than $.50 in 1996/97 and would for comparable numbers of searches reached $2.25 per search - the $.55 per search as part of the block searching is economically advantageous.
New Services: 3. Encyclopedia Britannica available on LAN and campus Internet connections effective September 1996. We used 7,316 accesses to the encyclopedia over the course of the fiscal year.
4. TAMU System databases were available effective September 1996: 9 Wilson databases; Medline and PsycINFO files. These resources expand the number of files available to our users and may replace LAN products. Wilson access through September 1997 were 4,185. Medline were 1,940 plus what was done through other means of accessing Medline (FirstSearch: 387 , other Internet sites which do not provide statistics). PsycINFO has corrupted data, but the initial counts are 88 for the August 1996-August 1997 period. We are hopeful that this data will be reconstructed before long.
5. Expanded TexShare usage by x%. This has proven impossible to calculate since the data for system use prior to April 1997 was lost . They hope to have accurate statistics for this fiscal year.
6. Tested and added Project MUSE, full-text database from Johns Hopkins University Press, available May 1997.
7. Began trial subscription to EBSCO Host, August 1997. |
| Provide remote access to some CD products from the LAN. Expanded scope of this project to provide access to all networked computers on campus and PPP access from homes. | library director, reference librarians, data processing staff | Spring 1997 | 1. WAN access to ERIC files - July 1996
2. WAN access to Mental Measurements Yearbook - Gee Library, September 1996 Metroplex, October 1996
3. WAN access to Dallas Morning News, 1996-1997 - December 1996
4. WAN access to Women R full text files - February 1997
We are working with CTIS staff to provide usage data for each database on a monthly basis. Not yet available eff. 10/97.
Remaining LAN products are limited to LAN access by licensing and technical issues. We have added two Internet stations to support increased user activities with the above databases within the Library. |
| Extended BI program to provide campus-wide access and training on many of the new databases. | reference librarians | Ongoing | 1. Establish series of drop-in training sessions
2. Analyze use data and assistance requests to assess effectiveness of training program. Maintain separate counts of sessions attendance to analyze needs for BI outside of formal class settings. |
| Increase size of the LAN to enable more students to access various products and the Internet. | library director, reference librarians, data processing staff | Spring 1997 | Monitoring of use of area and "turnaway" rate on ongoing basis; 2 additional Internet stations added to Reference in Summer 1997. |
| Internet access to Special Collections finding aids | Archivist, Catalog Librarian and Reference librarian responsible for Gee Library WEB page support | Ongoing | Access via OCLC database as well as testing digitizing techniques for web access to finding aids and indices created within the Special Collections Department.
