Additional 21 databases were available on a special fee arrangement. Initial program required more outreach for use and it remains a goal to improve use of these resources.

Goal #__4_. Goal Statement: Experiment with FirstSearch toward the goal of providing free access to many databases to students and faculty via Internet.

FirstSearch Library Director, Systems Librarian, Reference Librarians, faculty, CTIS support Fall 1995 1. Initially available solely within Gee Library Reference Dept., Nine (9) FirstSearch databases became generally available across the network in Fall 1996. Dial-in ports for faculty and students were increased in August 1996.

2. Additional 21 databases were available on a special fee arrangement. Initial program required more outreach for use and the "Always on Thursdays" program was launched in Summer 1996. It remains a goal to improve use of these resources in 1996/97.


Goal #__5_. Goal Statement: Expand free interlibrary loan service to students and faculty affected by periodical cancellations.

UMI deposit account via TexShare ILL Librarian, ILL staff Spring 1996 $2,000 fund established to accommodate problem requests, particularly for dissertations and theses, and to request articles from journals no longer held and no longer available through standard ILL relationships.


Goal #__6_. Goal Statement: Special funding allocations for Acquisitions

Dept. of Journalism Acquisitions Librarian, Acquisitions staff Summer 1996 Special supplemental funding ($1,000) to support accreditation of undergraduate program in Journalism.
Dept. of Sociology Acquisitions Librarian, Acquisitions staff; Dr. Grissett Summer 1996 Supplemental funding to enhance social work holdings in anticipation of approval of Masters in Social Work degree. Preliminary analysis of the collection development in this area has been done and shared with Dr. Grissett.

Goal #__7_. Goal Statement: Complete on-line catalog database.

Library of English Literature Systems Librarian, Catalog Librarian and Catalog Dept. staff Fall 1995 Analytic records for this ultrafiche collection were added to the database in Fall 1995.
Library of American Civilization Systems Librarian, CTIS staff Summer 1996 Bibliographic records were purchased and the DRA license expanded to include tape loading with local holdings information. CTIS is still working on final software modifications to allow for completion of this project (October 1996)
MARCIVE Government Documents Records Systems Librarian, CTIS staff, Government Documents Librarian Summer 1996 Bibliographic records were purchased and the DRA license expanded to include tape loading with local holdings information. CTIS successfully loaded test data in October 1996. Profiling for live database is ongoing. Project remains 1996/97 goal.


Goal #__8_. Goal Statement: Relocation or Removal of card catalog.

Removal of Card Catalog Library Director; library staff, faculty library committee and Deans' Council Summer 1996 Removed Card Catalog in August 1996 after final consultations with Deans' Council and VP for Academic Affairs.


Goal #__9_. Goal Statement: Training and prepare technical services librarians and staff for public service activities.

Demonstrations of TexShare Use, Internet use, Netscape & Mosaic Library Staff Summer 1995 Sessions initiated by Reference Librarians; discontinued with loss of three librarians in the early Winter. Ongoing goal with associated cross-training in technical services techniques anticipated in future.
Backup staffing for Metroplex Librarian Serials Librarian, Reference/Collection Development Librarian Spring 1997 Initial training of Serials Librarian has occurred and critical backup times can be covered; ongoing training and planning involving new reference librarian will be part of 1996/97 activities.
