OPT MAINTENANCE

Address Changes

TAMU-Commerce students remain the responsibility of the ISSO throughout their OPT period. They are still considered F-1 students. OPT students must provide the ISSO with address changes within 10 days of each move. Updating myLeo is not sufficient. The student should provide the address to the ISSO directly through the online Request Form or individual email to any ISSO staff.

OPT Travel

Students who have been approved for OPT may not be allowed to re-enter the US unless they can produce:
  • An unexpired passport and F-1 visa
  • OPT I-20
  • Unexpired EAD
  • Proof of employment.
US entry/re-entry is always at the discretion of port of entry officials.

Changing OPT Employers

Unlike CPT, students on OPT may change employers multiple times throughout the OPT period without special authorization or notification to the ISSO or USCIS. However, if the change involves an address change, the student must notify the ISSO within 10 days of each move.

Options After OPT

There is a 60-day grace period after OPT ends. During that time the student may finalize entry into another academic program, change visa status or prepare to leave the US. Any plans other than departure may take more than 60 days to arrange, so plans should be made early.
