PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Responsible for assisting the library director with the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of the library.  Provides oversight for all public service areas of the library which includes Archives, Circulation, Curriculum, Government Documents, Microforms, and Reference Services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Plans, coordinates, and provides oversight for the departments and areas of reader services, library instruction, government documents, circulation, curriculum, archives and special collections, microforms.
  2. Supervises the public services aspect of the collection development efforts of 5 professional persons.
  3. Assists other librarians in the preparation of reports necessary to provide library information regarding new programs and accreditation reports.
  4. Provides oversight of distance education effects provided by reference librarians and interlibrary loans/distance education librarian.
  5. Assists the library director in formulating procedures and policy decisions.
  6. Serves as a liaison to electronic vendors in matters concerning electronic products.
  7. Collects statistics concerning the use of electronic products which are used to evaluate usefulness of products and whether to continue, replace, or drop such services.
  8. Works with counterparts in Technical Services to coordinate local and remote access to electronic products.
  9. Provides oversight in management of web pages for subject specialist librarians as well as the reference services department.  Provides input for development of library website.
  10. Participates in planning for further development of all technology offerings in the library.
  11. Attends meetings, participates in special projects and serves on committees relating to the library, the university and consortia.
  12. Maintains professional expertise appropriate to meet service and planning requirements in areas assigned.
  13. Contributes to the effective team management of all relevant problems, issues, and opportunities.
  14. This job description shall include, but is not necessarily limited to, the above duties. May temporarily perform other duties assigned to maintain operations and services.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Marginal Functions will vary with the specific assignment and depend on the particular unit or function for which the person is responsible. Consideration will be given on a case by case basis and reassignment of marginal duties will be made when appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires ALA accredited Master’s in Library or Information Science and three (3) years of increasing administrative responsibility in a library.  Must possess a high level of expertise in use of electronic products and must have a broad knowledge of library automation.  Organizational, communication, training, and supervisory skills are necessary.  A 2nd Master’s is preferred.

SUPERVISION OF PERSONNEL:

Supervises professional Librarians and Library Assistants

PHYSICAL / MENTAL / ENVIRONMENT:

Physical Demands:  Normal office activity of sitting, standing, walking, carrying, bending, crawling, climbing and lifting..

Environment/Hazard demands:  Pleasant working conditions, may deliver information across campus in emergencies. 

Extreme Ambulatory Requirements:  Must be able to sit/stand/move with no physical limitations or aids to perform activities of this position.

Normal Cognitive Requirements: Ability to learn, remember, and integrate rules, policies, or practices guiding the performance of an activity.

Normal Speech/Communication Requirements:  Ability to communicate verbally with supervisors, co-workers and students to gather information and/or explain procedures.

Normal Written Communications Required: Ability to continually record information such as draft correspondence/reports/documents/policies/procedures, conduct interviews and record information, prepare case narratives, or prepare other lengthy documents using handwritten or mechanical means.

Normal or Corrected Reading Vision Required:  Ability to read with attention to details.

Normal or Corrected Hearing Required: Ability to hear and understand speech to interact with coworkers/clients/customers on a routine or frequent basis with use off amplifying equipment/hearing aids.

Travel Demands: Moderate travel required, ability to travel occasionally for activities such as out- of- town    meetings or training sessions.

Lifting Demands:  May lift office equipment and supplies on occasion.
