What kinds of computers do you have at TAMU-Commerce?See Computing Services. If my computer has a hardware problem, what can I do?See Computer Hardware Maintenance. Technology Services only maintains university-owned computers. If my computer has a software problem, such as Windows crashing or failing to load or I get too many pop-up ads?Technology Services maintains all university computers, We need the same information to repair software as we do to repair hardware. We can fix some software problems on personal computers of faculty, staff, and students. Please contact Technology Services at 903-468-6000 before bringing your computer to our office. E-Mail QuestionsHow do I get an E-mail address? You must complete an application for an E-mail account and present a picture ID at the Technology Services front desk. There are accounts available for Faculty & Staff. Students receive a Leo account, a web-based email account. This is created automatically as a part of setting up your MyLeo access. Only current students receive an email address. Faculty and Staff may receive a Microsoft Exchange account or a POP account. Faculty and Staff accounts are not limited in size, per se, but the POP server runs slowly with mailboxes larger than 10 megabytes. Also, very large Exchange mailboxes will lose their "send mail" access until the mailbox is cleaned up. Click here for help cleaning your Outlook/Exchange mailbox. All new Faculty and Staff are encouraged to apply for a Microsoft Exchange account. The application for Faculty/Staff email accounts is available online, but must be delivered to Technology Services by hand. What is my E-mail address? If you are a student, your address will be login@leo.tamu-commerce.edu. Your login is usually your first initial and last name, occasionally followed by a number. If you are a faculty or staff member, your address will be Firstname_Lastname@tamu-commerce.edu. If you are a retired faculty or staff member, your address will sometimes be Firstname_Lastname@cp.tamu-commerce.edu. How can I change my Outlook Password? You can follow the directions to change your network password (which uses the same credentials as your Outlook account). When I try to reply to or forward a message using webmail, nothing happens. Why is this? In order to reply to or forward a message, Internet Explorer needs to open up a pop-up window. If you have installed Service Pack 2 for XP or have another pop-up blocker installed, these pop-up windows are blocked. Click here for instructions for allowing these pop-ups with XP Service Pack 2. How can I check my email when I'm off campus or away from my computer? If you use Outlook (not Outlook Express) to access your email, click here for instructions regarding accessing your email via webmail. If you use Eudora or Outlook Express to access your email, click here for instructions regarding accessing your email via webmail. Networking QuestionsHow can I change the password for logging onto my computer or for my Outlook email? You can follow the directions for changing your network password. How do I use an SIS printer code? You can follow the instructions for setting up your printer code. But my printer still won't print! If your printer will not print even after setting up your printer code, you may need to set your printer in text mode. My Ethernet connection isn't working.Have you read the Ethernet FAQ? Software Use and Licensing QuestionsWhat do I need to know about software and the U.S. copyright act?Software is protected by copyright law unless it has been placed in the public domain. The owner of a copyright holds exclusive right to the reproduction and distribution of their work. Without permission of the copyright owner, it is illegal to duplicate or distribute software or its documentation without the permission of the copyright owner. However, you may make a backup copy for your own use in case the original is destroyed or fails to work. Can I loan software I have purchased myself? If your software came with a clearly visible license agreement, or if you signed a registration card, READ THE LICENSE CAREFULLY before you use the software. Some licenses may restrict use to a specific computer. Copyright law does not permit you to run your software on two or more computers simultaneously unless the license agreement specifically allows it. If software is not copy-protected, do I have the right to copy it?The lack of copy protection does NOT constitute permission to copy software in order to share or sell it. "Non-copy-protected" software enables you to make a back up copy. The developer or publisher has demonstrated trust in your integrity to abide by the license. May I copy software that is available through facilities on campus, so I can use it more conveniently in my own room or office?Software acquired by colleges and universities is usually licensed. The licenses restrict how and where the software may be legally used by university members. This includes, but is not limited to, software installed on all media hard disks, floppy disks, tapes, CD's and software available on a campus mainframe or network. Consult the Technology Services department if you are unsure about the use of a particular software. Isn't it legally "fair use" to copy software if the purpose in sharing it is purely educational? It is illegal for a faculty/staff member or student to copy software, for distribution among the members of a class, without permission of the author or publisher. Account QuestionsHow do I apply for a host system account?Come to our office in the Business Administration Building, Room 156. You can complete an application right in our office. It will take up to two business days for your account to be created. I don't have a computer (or modem). Does this mean I can't get an account to access the Internet or receive E-mail?You can still get a Leo account and access it from any of the labs on campus designated for general use. How long can I keep my account?Faculty and/or Staff accounts are retained until employment is terminated. E-mail accounts for students that are no longer enrolled are removed at the beginning of each spring and fall semester.
