Carl D. Perkins Leadership Grant Awarded

Dr. Vanessa Huse of the Mathematics Department has been awarded a Carl D. Perkins Leadership grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for PodCast Training for CTE Online.  This award totals $150,681 for one year.
 
The purpose of this project is to provide training and technical assistance to community college faculty on the use of podcasts in their technical and vocational courses to enhance online instruction.  The grant will target 10 community colleges in central and east Texas who will send a three member team to training in December 2008. Each participant will be given the tools to implement podcast in their courses.

New Publication produced by Derek Royal

Derek Royal, Liberal Studies Director and Department of Literature and Languages, has recently had two publications come out.

A journal article in comics and adaptation, “Sequential Poe-try: Recent Graphic Narrative Adaptations of Poe.”
Poe Studies/Dark Romanticism 39-40 (2007-2008): 55-67.

And a chapter in a book devoted to recent American literature, “Contesting the Historical Pastoral in Philip Roth’s American Trilogy.” American Fiction of the 1990s. Ed. Jay Prosser. London: Routledge, 2008. 121-34.

A&M-C Prof Wins 11th Composing Award From ASCAP

COMMERCE, Texas - The awards keep coming for Dr. Ted Hansen, a professor and nationally known composer in the Texas A&M University-Commerce Department of Music.

Hansen has received his 11th consecutive ASCAPLUS Award for his work as a composer in the 2008-2009 academic year.

"It feels good to be recognized when you are working hard," said Hansen, former music department head. "I compose as an expression of my philosophy. In a general sense, I hope that my music is perceived as an affirmation of the human spirit and as a profound and joyful celebration of life," he said.

His award is based on published works and performances as determined by ASCAP media surveys, composition work, and quality of compositions in the opinion of the award panel. ...more

Tolkien Grant Secured for Summer 2009

Dr Judy Ford, History Department and Dr. Robin Reid, Literature and Languages have been notified that the NEH grant proposal for an Institute for Teachers on Tolkien has been approved (the total amount of this institutional grant is $175,395) for Summer 2009.

Large Multidisciplinary Grant Awarded

A multidisciplinary project using video games to help teach sciences at middle and high schools in the Northeast Texas area has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the amount of $992,663.00. Dr. Bao-An Li, and Dr. Sam Saffer from the College of Arts and Sciences were joined by Dr. Gil Naizer (PI) and Dr. Tracy Henley of the College of Education and Human Services in submitting the successful grant. According to Dr. Li of the Physics Department, “We will have workshops for science teachers and selected students on our campus during the summer and then follow them up with school visits during the academic years. We developed a curriculum combining game design with science concepts, and we will see how it helps students learn the sciences behind the games. It is really a multi-disciplinary project.”

Professor Invited to Speak

Dr. Shannon Carter, Associate Professor of English has been invited to speak at Prairie View A&M-University about how to give student writing greater exposure on campus and the surrounding community. They want to know about our own Celebration of Student Writing, see our video, and learn about how they might put together their own CSW at Prairie View. While at Prairie View, Dr. Carter will also serve as a consultant for integrating their writing center and writing programs more deeply and coherently.

Art Alumnus Wins National Award

Alicia Pol a Fall 2007 graduate of Texas A&M University-Commerce with a BFA in Art Direction has won the top Student Award “Best of Show” in the National Student ADDY Awards. This is a huge national recognition of the strength of our Design Program. Alicia was a product of our Art program enrolling as a freshman, achieving both Dean’s List and Presidents List while she was a student here. "This is a really great achievement and really shows the good job that the whole Art Department has been doing," according to Mr. Joe Daun, Art Department Head.

The AAF Student ADDY Awards Competition is a unique national awards program designed specially for college students. Work entered at the local level can move up to the regional and national judging, just like the work entered by professionals across the country. Alicia was awarded a $1000.00 prize for her winning work.

Large Science Grant Awarded

The National Science Foundation has awarded a grant of $310,000 to Texas A&M University-Commerce for support of a project entitled "MRI: Acquisition of a IM-Q-TOF Mass Spectrometer," and is under the direction of Laurence Angel, Frank Miskevich, Nenad Kostic, and Stephen Starnes.

According to Dr. Laurence Angel the purchase of this state-of-the-art instrument will tremendously enhance the research capability and assist the university to recruit high quality students to the program. Dr. Angel is the PI in this grant.

This award is effective August 15, 2008 and expires July 31, 2011.
