Swine Program

The swine program in the Department of Agricultural Sciences is focused primarily on providing an educational experience for our students.  We routinely have students working with AI, litter processing and farrowing throughout the year as these opportunities come available.  Farrowing at the swine barn is timed to accommodate both class scheduling and also for the production of 4-H and FFA show prospects for local, regional and major shows.

Our herd consists of 12 production sows that are divided into 3 farrowing schedules.  These farrowing times are late March/early April, late August/early September and late November/early December.  Sows produce 2 litters per year, one at their assigned time and the other litter off-season.  These off-season litters will be used in the future for testing boars produced on the farm and selected AI breedings to assist in determining the most optimal crossing for our in-season litters.  As this program continues we will be farrowing every two months. This will allow us to sell show prospects, replacement females and prospect  boars to outside patrons.
