BEEF CATTLE
The beef herd at Texas A&M University Commerce consists of a commercial herd and two small purebred herds of Hereford and Angus. The purebred herds are relatively new and have been started within the last three to four years. As with all the Universities herds, we are constantly trying to improve the the quality of the livestock.
The registered Hereford herd is made up of approximately twenty head. These cows are daughters of WTK Bond 55y and Klondike 28v 602c. The Hereford herd is artificially inseminated to bulls such as Haroldson's Drummened 56G, DCC 20x Litterman J7, and VPI Limited Edition. The herd is then exposed to sons of Anhinga Vic69R579 and LLL Nuff said 45H. Heifer claves are for replacements and bulls are sold to area cattlemen for herd bulls or kept for service in the commercial herd.
The purebred Angus herd is composed of 5 head. We will be having approximately 10 embryo transfer calves this fall and spring. The Angus cattle have been purchased from Clark program, in which the herd has worked well in embryo transfer. The Angus cows were flushed to Twin Valley Precision E161 and producing 47 number one eggs. Texas A&M University Commerce purchased in the in the Creighton Dispersal a GAR Sleep Easy 1009 who is the dam of the high selling heifer in the Creighton Dispersal. She will enter Embryo Transfer after she calves this fall to GAR Grid Maker. As with the Hereford herd, heifers are kept for replacements and bulls are sold to area cattlemen or kept for use in the commercial herd.
EQUINE
The equine herd is composed of approximately 10 head of broodmares and one stallion. The mares are daughters of Mr. San Peppy, Son of a Doc, Jay Pepsan, Bob Acre Doc, Skippa Star, and grand daughters of Dan Commander. Our stallion is Papas Hickory Stick sired by Christy's Acre . We currently have two year olds, yearlings, and weanlings sired by smart Lil Paradign, Playma Tes Dually, Co Genuine Doc, and Papas Hickory Stick. Colts are usually sold as yearlings by auction or private treaty.
