Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) Minor

An interdisciplinary minor in Family and Consumer Sciences will be available beginning in the 2004-2005 catalog year. Dr. Bob Williams, Department of Agricultural Sciences, serves as the advisor for the minor. Questions may be directed to him at 903/886-5350 or Bob_Williams@tamu-commerce.edu.

The need exists for employees who have a broad understanding of family and consumer related issues. Several governmental agencies (Texas Cooperative Extension, Texas Department of Human Services, and Texas Workforce Commission) as well as public schools seek to employ applicants with this knowledge base. As pressure on families to extend their human, financial, and household resources increases as well as the need to balance responsibilities between family and career, the demand for professionals with specific course work addressing these issues will continue. The minor in Family and Consumer Sciences was developed to provide professionals with majors in other disciplines the opportunity to take courses relevant to these issues in a rationale and recognizable format.

Courses required for the minor are:

FIN 130   Personal Finance     3
FDSC 210 Principles of Food Science    3 Spring
HED 331    Nutrition 3
COUN 316 Parent and Family Dynamics 3 Fall
COUN 414 Home and Family Living 3 Spring
