1. Gather all tools needed for sampling

      a.  clean plastic bucket (avoid metal containers due to nutrients into sample, e.g. copper, iron)

      b.  sampling tool - shovel, trowel, spade, auger, sampling tube

2. Obtain collection bags from local Agricultural Extension Agent

3. Select area to be analyzed (garden, lawn, field, pasture)

4. Begin by removing any plant matter from sample surface

5. Using tool, reach desired depth for sampling (3"-6")

6. Take a very narrow slice of soil (the core) from the desired depth

7. Collect sufficient number of samples (10-15 or 4-6 from each area)

8. Fill collection bag to desired amount (bag labeled "fill-line")

9. Label each bag to area taken ( easy for you to remember)

10. Fill out soil sample information/order form obtained from extension agent

11. Mail payment, form and soil samples to address listed on bags and order form

12. Wait for the results (usually 2-3 weeks)
